Learning Resources Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog
Spike The Fine Motor Hedgehog toy is designed to help children to improve their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, finger dexterity, and knowledge of colors and shapes. The toy consists of a hedgehog-shaped base with colourful & removable quills. The toy is recommended for children aged 18 months and up.
How WE used it/What we liked
We all LOVED Spike the Fine Motor Hedgehog, and it had a starring position in our fine motor work from early on. The quills are a good size that our daughter could get her hand over the end of them even with limited opening of her hand, and was able to pull them out fairly easily thanks to the low resistance. The element of positioning her hand in the right spot for the right colour, and then learning to place them back in the holes meant we got a few different skills practiced with it.
Look out for
If your child doesn’t have much wrist function to twist or bend the quills to change the angle they may struggle to put the quills back in, but in that instance we’d hold the hedgehog and move it into the right position to ensure a successful attempt.
